Choosing The Right Destination Wedding Videographer For You

You’ve chosen your future spouse. You've chosen the destination. Now you need to choose someone who can make your day truly unforgettable. Who will you choose? How do you decide? Here are a few things to keep in mind when finding the perfect videographer for your destination wedding.

Your photos will be stunning but your video captures the moments when you are your truest self. Your wedding video should show all your best sides but it also should tell a story. Your love story. Your video should remind you of how your life together began next year, 5 years from now, 50 years from now.

Look at their past work

When looking for a wedding videographer it really pays to look through their past work. It’s important to hire an artist with a style you're in love with. There are lots of different ways to tell the same story. Think of all the styles of romantic movies. What style is your love story? Try to find a videographer who has similar aesthetic taste.

Find a connection

It is often impossible to meet your destination videographer in person before you hire them but a video chat or phone call is usually enough to see if they are the right fit for you. Your videographer will follow you around throughout your wedding day. They will be there for some very intimate moments. It’s important to find someone you can trust and feel like yourself around.

It’s not uncommon for me to keep in touch and stay friends with my past clients. After all, they invited me to their wedding and I traveled across the world to be there.

Tell them what you want

Notice things you liked from other’s wedding videos, or even your favorite romantic movies so you can tell your videographer exactly what you’re looking for. It’s pretty fun to watch strangers’ wedding videos for inspo and good feelings. Going into your first consultation with a list of the things you want and questions for them is always a good idea.

Find someone who will listen

This is perhaps the most important advice I have. Find someone who will listen; to your love story, to who you are, to how you want to remember your day. Find someone who will collaborate with you to make something that is authentically you. Cookie cutter wedding videos don’t show off anyone’s best side. Your romance is unique - your wedding video should be too.

Make sure you hire a professional

For a destination event videographer you can expect to pay between $500-$5000+usd. As with many things in life, you get what you pay for. Your wedding video is an investment you are making for the rest of your life. Unless there is a new talent looking to break into the market it is pretty risky to hire on the lower end of that scale.

As many things in life, if the deal seems too good to be true, it probably is. There’s a lot happening on your wedding day. It's best to find someone experienced, adaptable, and professional, so you can focus on getting married.

Photographers are not videographers. It is a very different medium. Some very talented individuals and teams are experts at both but they are the exception not the rule. I would be wary of photography/videography combos. Take the time to look into the team’s past work and make sure the offer really is as good as it seems.

Find someone with travel experience

Even if you choose to hire someone local to your destination it is helpful to find someone who also loves to travel. Someone who understands what it’s like to travel will have more global awareness. It will also give you something in common to chat about.

Hiring local vs. Flying someone with you

Hiring Local

Pros:

  • Boosts the local economy of your destination.

  • They know the hot spots for epic shots.

  • They can recommend you other things to do in the area while you’re having your luxury wedding vacation

Cons:

  • There may be cultural differences, so be aware that you’re communicating well and everyone is on the same page.

Hiring A Professional Destination Event Videographer

Pros:

  • They are professional travlers.

  • You get to travel with an entourage.

  • You get to choose the exact right fit from artists all over the world.

  • They will be flexible and resourceful in the face of the unexpected.

Cons:

  • They may not know specifics about your destination.

  • You will probably pay a bit extra for travel expenses.

ONE LAST TIP

Connect your videographer with your photographer

Whether you choose to hire a local or fly in your own entourage it’s a good idea to make sure that your photography team and videography team know about each other and get the chance to connect before the day of your wedding. They will be working closely to get the best result for you. A simple introduction email or instagram message is usually all it takes.

Best of luck to you on the exciting journey.
